Stated Description

A View In The Dark is a site dedicated for reporting and therefore find locations of shops and guilds in the city. It's like a sort of very open bulletin board where anyone can participate without registering before in any kind to do so. Also, information which becomes obsolete (as shops and guilds move regularly) will be purged automatically as long the times have reported they change (See below). Note that a hunter's location given is subject to change quickly.

Group History

It was started in November 10th, 2005 by the mortal behind the vampire †cliffburton. Since then it is running with only a few hours interruption. In the beginning it was only reachable at http://vampire.cliffburton.de. Since 2007 you will find it also at it's own domain, http://aviewinthedark.net/.

I started this site as I was unhappy always to have calculating with the timezone when I read a posting made about actual locations in forums such as (but in particular) †Devil Miyu's great Lost in Shadows_(Player Resource) Livejournal. The name A View In The Dark is a pun on that, I don't know if I am the only one who gets that, though :) .. If you're lost in shadows, you might need a view in the dark. --Cliff Burton Marco 12:57, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

How it works

Everyone who wants to, can post new locations at the board. All it takes is to hit the report-link and fill in the name of the object and its location.

Since the beginning of 2011 you are also able to copy the information the barkeeper tells you and paste it into the barkeeper parser. The site will try to filter the information and set the fields for you.

So far there is no registration necessary to use the site, but you can use your name to show up with your post. The site remembers that name by saving a cookie. Also there is a highscore like table, called the Hall of Fame. It should be told that the name used with doing the report isn't protected and anyone (including you) can post with a false name, but postings get logged, so better don't do that. This comes with the open approach I decided in the beginning. With additional features this might be subject to change, though.

How it doesn't work

Sending me locations for me to post. Funny, that those who did this in the past always forget to tell when they found the location and in which timezone this happened :)

Changing of times the shops or guilds are moving

To clear on thing out. I don't get new move dates from Raven Black!

From time to time (About every year, not exactly though) he likes to meddle (to make it more interesting) with the times the guilds and shops change. This can't be foreseen when it happens, neither what the new times are. So the sites APF™ (automagic purging feature, patent pending) works it's magic when it shouldn't. This means that YOU need to figure out, note and send me changes. Telling me that they moved but not exactly when, doesn't help. Also it doesn't help me, if you tell me dates w/o the information in which timezone you are living.

Vandalism & tracking

Posting is logged to track down vandalism. Continued vandalism or unbearable behavior in doing so will be threaded by a lifetime ban.

Remember, that not everyone who seem to post false information is doing this intensionally. If you think you noticed vandalism, drop Cliff/Marco a note (See Contact below).

Daylight Saving Times

Twice a year the site might be off an hour, for the difference of days the switching happens between germany and other countries.

Everyone who knows the exact dates and times is welcome to inform Cliff/Marco (See Contact below) to get it to work as it is supposed to.

Due to report I adjusted the time when the board is cleared. I hope this time it is correct. Would be good if someone could verify it. --Cliff Burton Marco 02:30, 21 April 2011 (CEST)

v0.5x (Old incarnation)

This is how the site looked the most of the time, which is for more than 5 years.

v0.6x (February 2011 Update)

In February 2011 the site received a major design overhaul, which not only included new logos (which still change and have glowing eyes), but also more functionality. These are:

  • 2 colored list on the main page tables.
  • Being able to scroll up from below each table.
  • Report from below each table.
  • Sorting the Hall o'Fame in both ways.
  • Color coded look of the Hall of Fame entries.
  • The color code shows glowing red for recent activity to darkish blue/grey for no activity.
  • A in front of a name means this entry won't be purged (because of at least 50 posts made).
  • A - in front of a name means this entry supposed to be purged next because of special rules.
  • About links to this page in the wiki.
  • Wiki links to the RavenBlackCitypedia Main Page.

v1.x (March 2011 Update)

Finally Version 1.x, after 5 years. Parsing the message the barman gives was something I intended to do since the site went online.

I hope using it is at least a bit intuitive and something you will like. I do.

Also planned is an aid with the Charisma quest. Let's hope I get enough motivation from your feedback to do it before the next 5 years are gone by. Cheers! --Cliff Burton Marco 03:02, 1 March 2011 (CET)

v1.1x (April & May 2011 Updates)

*Pawn Shops are told without Shop in name. They are irregularely. --Cliff Burton Marco 22:41, 4 June 2011 (CEST)
