†Mandolin

Childhood

Mandolin was born in as Ceara Aiden ó Broin in 1725 to Dairinn and Ruarc ó Broin.

Her mothers side of the family has strong ties to the old Celt community. Ceara was always told that her so-many-times grandfather has stood with the true families as they tried to hold back the Roman invasions, and the Norman and English after that. As a slight irony, her fathers side had been some of those invaders. Sometime in the 1200's a Norman had fallen for a Celt girl and the families united. Both of her parents were very proud of their roots on the emerald isle and instilled that pride and love Ceara and their other children.

Her family was comfortably situated in the town of Dún Seachlainn. Located about 29 km northwest of Dublin it provided a good atmosphere for Caera to spend the first few years of her life. Her mother made a good living by being one of the towns best seamstresses. Her father was a popular painter and was often away in Dublin on business which included painting murals and portraits for the wealthy merchants and other people 'in society'. in 1729 Ruarc was introduced to the French Anne Frédéric, the Duc de Châtellerault. The Duc was quite fond of the Irishman's paintings and had a few small works commissioned that were to be picked up the following year when the Duc returned to Ireland.

The Duc returned to Dublin in the summer of 1730 to pick up his paintings. He was impressed with the quality and asked Ruarc if he would consider coming to France and doing some work on the family estate for him... at a rate of pay which was not seen in or anywhere around Dublin at the time. Ruarc asked for a few days to consider the offer discuss it with his wife. After a few days Dairinn and Ruarc had decided to accept the Duc's offer and move their small family to France. When the family made the trip to France in the late summer of 1730 there were 4 all together. Dairinn, Ruarc, Ceara, and the youngest girl Bridgid. Dairinn would find out she was pregnant with a boy shortly after they landed in France and became settled in a modestly upscale home in Ivry, just outside of Paris.

Young Adulthood

Ruarc spent much of the next several years at the Duc's home working on various projects. The ó Broin children soon began to enjoy the benefits of their fathers new job. With all the money Ruarc was making from his work for the Duc and other new commissions the family was able to afford a good tutor for the girls, and later the son. Ceara and Bridgid learned to read and write in French and English in addition to the Irish they had grown up with. Both girls were taught the popular dances at the time and how to handle oneself in proper company. Ceara learned to play both the piano forte and the violin quite well, and Bridgid was wonderful on the harp. The girls also became fast friends with the Duc's daughters and started two mingle with some of the King's court as they got older.

Ceara came out in society at the age of 16. At that point she was considered eligible for marriage. Given that her father now has a small fortune she was assured some good prospects, however she was still from a 'lower class' of people and could not expect to marry as highly as the Duc's daughters. Fortunately, her good looks and association with the Duc's family made her an object of interest among some of the minor lords at court. Her red hair was a particular interest because, while that color was fairly common in her homeland, it was far rarer on the main European continent.

As a young lady of modest means, Ceara could enjoy both the benefits of moving in socially advantageous circles and avoid the political side of many unions that girls or higher status were subject to. Ceara did have a few offers of marriage when she was between 16 and 20 that fell through. Men who were at first attracted to Ceara because of her unique looks soon went head to head with her strong personality. Staying true to her Celtic roots, Ceara possessed a quick temper, strong opinions, and a fierce stubborn streak that did not mesh well with her suitors. For a young woman of her time she was also well educated and had opinions on matters that were generally discussed by males in private company. Those qualities which made her true to her family were the same ones which made her an unsuitable wife.

By the time she reaches 23 she was considered too old to be more than a second or third wife for an older man. Her thoughts slowly shifted away from finding an acceptable husband and more to refining her skills at dressmaking so she could provide herself with a living once her parents passed away. At 24 she watched her younger sister marry one of her past suitors who had found Bridgid's quiet ways and sweet temper to be far more acceptable. Ceara's younger brother married one of the Duc's daughters the next year.

Turning

In 1751 Ceara was 25. She was comfortably settled in her sisters house as a companion and had mostly adjusted to life as a spinster. She still moved in the same social circles as before, but now with a more subdued roll since she was not actively seeking a husband. A few lords had been bold enough to set her up as a mistress and provide her with a life away from her family, but that did not suit her temperament.

In Late March there was a party held at her brothers home in honor of his first born son, Ceara's nephew. As the party stretched into the night Ceara grew tired and excused herself to one of the guest rooms to sleep. The wings of the grand house were empty of people as she made her way down the winding halls to her room. The last thing she remembered on that night was the feel of strong arms wrapping around her torso as she was pulled into a side hall, a sharp pain in her neck as a hand covered her mouth, and the sound of the piano and mandolins as her world went dark.

Sense of Something Coming

(August 2010 Roleplay)

Boxes upon boxes upon boxes. Boxes of books, clothes, linens, music, bar supplies, and just about everything else under the sun. One sat rather conspicuously on top of a box labeled ‘Electronics’ as it watched the slim redhead wander back and forth with various items and a roll of packing tape. It was curious as to all the commotion. Were they going away? It clicked and whirred in a disgruntled manner until the mistress came over and eyed it. Gathering its tiny spider body it moved up the lady’s arm and on to her shoulder, where it sat and murmured until the lady chuckled. “There’s no need to be angry, little One. I told you all last week that we need a bigger house. Tote and I need our own place and it needs to have more room than the town house here.” One, still not convinced that all was well continued to click insistently. “It’ll be fine, pet. You’ll see. Now, go find Six. I need a hand with the books in the living room...”

As one scuttled off, Mandolin sat down on the bed and looked around. Her life right now rather resembled her bedroom... slightly chaotic. Clan life was good, though a little stressful at times. For the first time in years she felt as if her clan truly was her home and those in it were her peers. Her family was growing and her childer were all wonderful. The grandchilder and great grandchilder added to the crazyness that had become the Amandine line. She had also been a childe to ophelia for almost a year now and never once had the woman been anything but supportive. Last, but not least was der Tote. He had left the city back when she was new here, so they had never really met. Her determination to learn more about him since his reappearance in February had lead to a 6 month courtship and finally a binding in July. Now the two of them were looking into buying a small estate for their lines and various other pets and possessions.

The redhead sighed and ran her fingers through her hair, wincing as she found a bit of tape stuck to her ponytail. Tote should be home soon and she was trying to finish cleaning most of the living room so they had somewhere to sit and relax come dawn. This in mind, it came as a bit of a shock when she saw a shadow pass across the doorway to her room. “Tote?” I didn’t expect you back so soon.” No answer. Setting down her roll of tape she peaked out into the living room and saw a male seated in one of her leather club chairs. Her nose wrinkled as the smell of sulfur and brimstone reached it. Only one being she knew came wrapped in that scent, and his ‘visits’ were never welcome. ‘What do you want, old one. I thought our dealing were done when you kicked me out of your damnable dimension years ago.”

“Ah, petite belle, our dealings were never done. I simply put you back here until I needed you. As it happens, I require you skills once more, and you still have time left to fill on your contract.” She glared at the man and crossed her arms ad she leaned against the door frame. “Our dealing should be well and done with as I have no attachment to the thing which caused me to enter your arena in the first place. You have no claim on me and I refuse to leave this place and the life I have here.” The man smiled, his cane tapping the hardwood floors three times before he stood and presented her with a scroll. “I think you’ll find the reading the fine print is always advised, madame.”

She cursed quietly as she unrolled the scroll and read it carefully. It was a contract for ‘otherworld mercenary services’ dated April, 2007. Her jaw clenched as she remembered what a foolish child she had been when she had followed her first love to that damned place where she met the man who currently stood in her living room. Scanning the paper again she noticed that today's date had recently been added to the document. “Today?” She turned to face the male. “You want me to leave now? That’s impossible!” He chuckled and slid over to her side, placing a burning hand on her shoulder. “Not only is it possible, my lovely, but it is required and immediate.”

A shooting pain shot through her body before she even had time to blink. The first few words of a message to Tote fled her mind before the rest of it died and her physical body crumpled to the floor of the hallway. The man smiled and gathered the woman in his arms before carrying her to her bedroom and laying her on the bed as if she was but sleeping. “And here your body shall stay, my dear, until you have finished your work.” Tipping his hat to the comatose body he chuckled and vanished in a flash of smoke and brimstone.

One and Six were hiding under the dresser when the dark man brought their lady into the bedroom. The pets waited as quietly as they could until the dark man had gone. One scurried out from under the dresser and checked the other rooms to make sure they had no other guests, while Six climbed up onto the bed and studied the lady. Six poked her arm and waited for a reaction. When nothing happened the mechanical scorpion climbed onto the lady’s stomach and poked her again, only a little harder. Still nothing. Six turned it’s mournful green eyes to One’s blue ones as the spider appeared on the nightstand. The lady was here, but not. The pets knew that the dark man had caused it. They also knew that the lady’s male would show up and want to know why she was asleep when she should be packing.

The scorpion curled up at the lady’s side while One fetched a bit of paper and some ink from one of the boxes. Dipping one of it’s legs into the liquid it wrote a few sentences on the paper and hurried back to the bedroom. Climbing back up onto the nightstand, One arranged the paper so that it would be easy to spot when the lady’s male come home. With a very disgruntled and depressed set of whirrs and clicks, One settled down on the nightstand to wait for the lady to awake.

Note: “Lady’s male, The dark man took the lady, but left her body. We could not stop him. She is sorry.”
