Ethics and Code of Conduct

Philosophy: Family above all else.
Motto: Corage Sans Peur ... Versus et fidelis semper (Courage Without Fear, True and faithful ever)
Family View on Torpor: L'Instinct de Mort honors torpor.
Name Sharing: Only those with a blood tie to the line are given the title at the time of the binding.
Intermarriage: Binding within the line is not permitted without first consulting †Lannair Cuan.
Diplomacy: The family favors peaceful resolution to verbal disputes, but will not allow any members of it's ranks to be attacked without retribution.
Family Values: As a whole the line has a deep moral fiber. Holding to what many other vampires view as "mortal" values, the line attempts to show through their actions that being a vampire doesn't mean you've been reduced to a mindless animal. They try to uphold the Seven Heavenly virtues; Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, and Humility.
Outward Traits: Inner beauty is most important to the line, but at the same time being under the symbol of the peacock they do have an appreciation for outward aesthetics. The men of L'Instinct de Mort are devilishly handsome, with rugged strong features and traditional masculine charm. The women of the line are all striking women, whose drop dead gorgeous features have been enhanced by their vamperic state.
Interesting Facts: L'Instinct de Mort runs like a Democracy. One doesn't join or leave the line without the whole being consulted. Because of this sirings are a rarity. Those that become members of the linage already have longstanding ties to the family.

Family Symbols and Items

The Peacock

In history, myth, legend and lore, the Peacock symbolism carries portents of: Nobility, Holiness, Guidance, Protection and Watchfulness. In Christianity the Peacock symbolism represents the “all-seeing” church, along with the holiness and sanctity associated with it. Additionally, the Peacock represents resurrection, renewal and immortality within the spiritual teachings of Christianity. In Babylonia and Persia the Peacock is seen as a guardian to royalty, and is often seen in engravings upon the thrones of royalty. In Greco-Roman mythology the Peacock is identified with Hera (Juno) who created the Peacock from Argus whose hundred eyes (seen on the tail feathers of the Peacock) symbolize the vault of heaven and the “eyes” of the stars.

Genevive selected the peacock as the family animal for L'Instinct de Mort. She felt the regal animal embodied the families close knit nature, hope, and beauty.

Fleur-de-Lis

The English translation of "fleur-de-lis" (sometimes spelled "fleur-de-lys") is "flower of the lily." This symbol, depicting a stylized lily or lotus flower, has many meanings. Traditionally, it has been used to represent French royalty, and in that sense it is said to signify perfection, light, and life. Legend has it that an angel presented Clovis, the Merovingian king of the Franks, with a golden lily as a symbol of his purification upon his conversion to Christianity. The Roman Catholic Church ascribed the lily as the special emblem of the Virgin Mary. Due to its three "petals," the fleur-de-lis has also been used to represent the Holy Trinity. Military units have used the symbol's resemblance to a spearhead to identify martial power and strength.

City Items

Pewter Celtic Cross

Costing 10,000 coin, the Pewter Celtic Cross represents the family's morals as well as several members devotion to their faith.

Compass

One of the first items †Penny ever gave to her childe †Jessy Wilde was a compass. The matching pair were charmed to point towards the other vampires location, so the sire and childe would always know where the other was. The brass pocket compass sold to the city is not charmed, but it looks very similar to the gift. The compass represents not only that gift, but the sailors and explores of the family. Immortality is an adventure L'Instinct de Mort fully takes advantage of.

Pewter Tankard

Not everything the bloodline does is deep and serious. The heavy tankard designed along with the Cuans shows their love for drinking and merriment.
