Lairs are buildings that are associated with a specific vampire, alternatively with a clan or other organization. A lair symbolizes the home, hideout, or headquarters of its owner. Lairs are permanent and stationary buildings, which have names and in-game descriptions chosen by the player who paid credits to create it. They are prestigeous landmarks, and can be centers for roleplaying. There are an ever-increasing number of lairs in RavenBlack City, and they are now the second most common building type (after banks).

All lairs have a maroon name sign: Devil Miyu's Lair

Effects

A lair is a visible building that displays its presence and name to anyone nearby. Any vampire that visits the square it is located at will see its custom in-game description. The description may include links to a website, and sometimes images.

The lair can be set up to protect the owning vampire. He or she will then benefit from an effect similar to Shadows when inside, meaning he or she will be Lost in Shadow faster and thus be protected from biting and robbing.

Extended lairs

Lairs can be upgraded to offer various things to visitors. Some of these extended lairs are shop-like and sell items, while others are pub-like and offer drinks.

Etiquette

Normally no in-game mechanisms stop you from staying inside another vampire's lair indefinitely or use a Scroll of Turning on it and its inhabitants. However, such behaviour is considered rude and would be a breach of social protocol.

Other similar buildings

The stationary shops are similar to extended lairs in that they are closely tied to donating players, but they are clearly marked as shops with their greyish blue signs.

The graves are also similar to lairs, with the crucial difference that they are tied to one or more deceased players. Graves have grey signs.

An ordinary pub can be renamed by a player for a cost in credits. The renamed pub can be seen as a personal hangout roleplay-wise, but technically it remains as before (apart from the new name).

Creating a lair

Players who want their own lair in the city must contact Raven Black about the desired name, location and description, as well as any extra features. A basic lair currently costs 300 credits, which in turn will cost 250 USD. The player will become the "owner" of the building, although this of course is virtual property. Lairs are permenent, meaning they will remain a city landmark for as long as the game will exist (even if the player cease to play).

Lairs can subsequently be changed or upgraded at the will of their owner, all at a substantial cost in credits. Name, description and even location can be changed this way. Adding an image to the description costs extra. Various owner-only features presumably exists.

Some upgrades will affect visitors, and make the lair an extended lair.

Demolition

Lairs are usually permanent, but can be removed at the request of the owner. Some previously existing lairs can be found in [[Category:Former Lairs]].

History

The first lair was Devil Miyu's Lair, which appeared in early December 2003.[1][2]

Lairs got the ability to shadow their owner and to display different descriptions 16 February 2004.[3]

Before the credits system was introduced, lairs were priced is USD donations. The first lairs did cost 100 USD, but the price has since gone up. The demand among players was obviously high. In the game FAQ Raven Black hints at a concern about lairs eventually becoming too commonplace unless the price tag is substantial.[4]
